As with most tasks, investing some time in planning and thinking through logistics in advance of running an event can pay dividends.  Nothing is worse with golf events than learning of mistakes you (or your staff/committee) made due to careless oversights, not having solid answers to questions, and generally not being thorough with anticipating needs in order to deliver a great golf experience.  The same holds true when it comes to facilitating pari-mutuels or any form of pre-round wagering.

Here are three best practices to implement BEFORE your event that will help you execute amazing wagering experiences for your participants:

  1. Don’t leave stones unturned when it comes to maximizing the fun factor for your event!  Think through all of the various opportunities that exist which lend well to a wagering component.  Too often, getting stuck with the mindset of ‘that is how it has been done in the past’ inhibits decision makers.  Likely, there are more opportunities for wagering predictions for your event…get creative!
  2. Clearly communicate what participants are being asked to predict with their wagers, and how the betting process works.  In your communication, educate potential participants how pari-mutuel wagering works, along with definitions, to maximize participation.  Define tie-breaking procedures that will be applied to the wagering component.  Use the Homestretch Golf proven pre-round instructional template to help cover all pertinent details and tailor the description to your event.
  3. Consider reserving a portion of the wagering action for a local charity.  Golf raises more philanthropic dollars than all other major sports combined.  Your participants know and appreciate this fact about our sport.  If there are causes important to your club, think how good it will feel to help that cause by fundraising with your wagering event!  Pros/Admins have the ability to reserve up to 20% of the wagering pot for charity on the Homestretch Golf platform when creating a tournament.
